If you’re one of the many new subscribers to Silent Strum, welcome! I’ll have a longer post later this week, but here’s some things I’m up to. -Kyle
Devotions for the Week
I’m the featured devotion writer this week at d365.org. It’s a weeklong series focusing on texts related to the Transfiguration. It’s all about change and I love the First Nations Version translation of Romans 12:2a:
“Do not permit the ways of this world to mold and shape you. Instead, let Creator change you from the inside out, in the way a caterpillar becomes a butterfly.”
A Show
I’m playing my only full band show of the month with Kyle Caudle & Timberline this Friday, February 28 at the Continental Club in downtown Greensboro, NC.
Doors at 7pm. Music at 8pm.
A Different Man
This weekend I watched A Different Man, a film that explores change, physical appearance, and identity. Without giving too much of the film away, it’s a moving psychological character study of what happens when people don’t see the authentic you, but also when people don’t see the authentic you because you don’t show it. Is our physical appearance our main identity or is it something deeper? You can’t help but empathize with Sebastian Stan’s character Edward/Guy while also hoping he will learn to be himself. Stan’s up for an Oscar™ for his lead role in The Apprentice (which interestingly falls on the Transfiguration Sunday due to the LA wildfires).
An Album
I’m finally getting around to Tyler Childers’ album, Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven?. It’s a weird and wonderful gospel album, the kind I hope to make someday. I’m often doubtful of the market for interesting takes on the gospel tradition, but Childers’ does gospel his way and I’m loving it. Thanks for restoring my faith, Timmy Ty.
